E la solita storia del Pastore" où Rolando excella et fit même couler quelques larmes;

ROLANDO VILLAZÓN, PUMEZA MATSHIKIZA – OPERA GALA KONZERTHAUS WIEN 20.OCT.2014

A Firework of voices and full of musical colors
(... And a secret mission ...!)

Insulated from the eyes of the artists and the audience, some great composers have found at a clandestine meeting in a salon near the Great Hall in the Konzerthaus in Vienna.
«Oui, oui Messieurs, you have to realize that "our" french star tenor Rolando Villazón after the grand Entree with my Ouverture Le Roi de Lahore, the prayer of Rodrigo Ah! Tout est bien fini ... Ô Souverain, ô Juge, ô Père from Le Cid with fervor and beauty has sung.»
«And then - ma belle Pumeza Matshikiza that had made with my Elégie so much sweetness in her clear voice» reaffirmed the French composer Jules Massenet his opinion.
«No, no realmente! Rolando is not from france.  - Él habla Español!  Él es méxicano! Y nuestro gran  orgullo!» , responded eagerly the five Spanish composers.
«Oui, he speaks many languages, especially the language of music - our music» - rumbled a little bit angrily Georges Bizet - «but my duet Leïla! Leïla! Dieu puissant le ... voilà - these two artists were truly phenomenal and full of emotions.»
«Si, but much more my Lamento di Federico … È la solita storia ...!» - Francesco Cilea gushed enthusiastically - «Grazie, Signore Villazón! Davvero fantastico, meraviglioso! Rolando excelled impressively with his excellent voice, his passionate interpretation, with his deep feelings!! Indescribable, incomparable!! I had tears in my eyes!»
«Fantastico, eccellente!  - But please do not forget that Maestro Voronkov and the musicians of the Philharmonic Orchestra Bohuslav Martinu have played my Intermezzo from Manon Lescaut with phenomenal dedication. And then two of my masterpieces ... Turandot and La Bohème! ... Signore, ascolta ...  -  del mia dolce Pumeza!» ... and Giacomo Puccini told in-between times with shining eyes that he was so enthusiastic about the duet «O soave fanciulla so touching, so emotional, with so much love and warmth! And those high notes! Grazie, Rolando e Pumeza! Grandioso, so must to be sung my operas!»

After the break, Gaetano Donizetti was in his element: «Mia Signori, prego ascolta mi, now my operas are the next, they are coming now! - My very revered composers, you must agree with me, that my Ouverture fromDon Pasquale was full of lightness and elegance played.» Donizetti reveled enthusiasticly «E mio Nemorino, Rolando – tu sei mio unico Nemorino!!!  With his Caro elisir! sei mio!… Tralala… Esulti pur la barbara … - is one of many reasons, that we all have to closed this great artist in our heart! This Rolando's a super talent, unique, an experience! He has a wonderful voice, a lot of imagination, burning passion, great sense of humor - a real stage presence! And his gorgeous aria Una furtiva lagrima, he sung glorious and hauntingly, beautifully!»
«Mio caro Gaetano», Giuseppe Verdi interrupts his colleague, «yes you're right, this Rolando is really unique, and he has always demonstrated his great talent and his marvelous voice in my "Viva Verdi-Concerts!" «But also Pumeza Matshikiza previously has sung with beautiful colors Sul fil d'un soffio etesio, when Nanetta calls the fairies out of their hiding places from the flower garden ... »
«Si, si, finally our Spanish works begin to shine!» rejoice the spanish composers.
«So my Intermediate from La boda de Luis Alonso is fully of Spanish temperament, muy buenos músicos y gran Maestro Voronkov!» Gerónimo Giménez noticed.

Reveriano Soutullo and Juan Vert radiated with pride and cried «Un sueño! Un gran éxito!... As Rolando has sung a fiery passionate performance from their Zarzuela La Soto del Parral with Ya mis horas felices  ... he has ravished the audience to a rapturous storm of applause ....!»

«And how fully of temperament is Pumeza with Oh! La pitoyable aventure from my L'heure espangnole!», Maurice Ravel happily narrated.
«Rolando Villazon - ¡Vaya un torero! And Pumeza Matshikiza his pretty gypsy woman! These two grand artists had sung full of passion and brilliance my composition Si, quiero torero sé from El gato montés and both have an excellent chemistry!» raved the spanish Zarzuela Composer Manuel Moreno Penella.

While the composers have discussed full of infatuation about this beautiful concert, there were four "bises":
Pablo Sorozábal was so inspired by Rolando powerful performance and his passionate feelings with the Zarzuela No puede ser from La tabernera del puerto, so that the composer nearly fell from his armchair.
Leonard Bernstein appeased the spirited spanish composer: «Hey man, do not so crazy! Pablo, don't make so much noise, that the people in the Great Concert Hall can perhaps hear you! - Listen dear, how beautiful Tony and Maria - oh sorry, of course I mean Rolando and Pumeza - sing from my musical West Side Story ... Tonight, tonight» - the American composer closes his eyes for a long moment and hummed the melody.
Miriam Makeba and Jerry Ragovoy - who had now come into the salon to the composer - jumped up from their seats, bobbed their bodies in dance rhythm to Pata, Pata, clapped their hands and shouted pleased: «Hey, this fantastic guy and this nice girl - finally brings our Hit!!! Wow, they both are great opera singers and Pumeza & Rolando make a perfect performance with our great song!»
The other composers were so fascinated by the rhythms and immediately they wanted to dance to this song.
«Signori, Signori - silenzio, silenzio!» - Giuseppe Verdi weighs his head thoughtful and begs his excited gentlemen composers around a little consideration. «In the great hall the artists still are singing! But as you hear dear gentlemen, the great feast of my opera La Traviata is in full swing. It sounds so, as if the people in the Great Concert Hall all laugh and celebrate! Come let us with my Brindisi also celebrate!»

And then, secretly the composers left the Salon at the Konzerthaus in Vienna.
Much later, the Billetteure and the staff from Konzerthaus were surprised, why in the salon several chairs and armchairs are standing so muddled, although this room was closed for the public ... ;-)

Great enthusiasm in the audience, thunderous applause, standing ovations, flowers and ... radiant faces - from the artists and the audiance!

Concerto grandioso! Mille grazie a tutti and to the "one and only" Rolando! And also Pumeza!

Cordial greetings
Edith from Vienna

Warm and bright sunshine under the cold and dark sky of Moscow
Moscow people are fine connoisseurs in music and greatly passionate music lovers. To perform in this city, is certainly a special experience for the artists. The acoustics of the beautiful and architecturally very interesting Tchaikovsky Hall are excellent, one has the impression of sitting under a fantastic and rich rain of sounds. After 2006, Rolando returned to delight the audience.
This time, we had the Moscow Symphonic Orchestra. Its sound is magnificent, very round, providing deep warmth and great cleanness of tone. Under the baton of Maestro Voronkov, the 'solos' of the orchestra were also great moments, we had colourful music in Massenet's 'The King of Lahore', heartrending notes in Puccini's 'Manon Lescaut' and particularly effervescent moments in 'The Wedding of Luís Alonso'. Maestro Voronkov offered all sophisticated and refined details of these challenging pieces. Great precision in each note, warm sound of the violins, perfection with wind instruments.
Pumeza Matshikiza sang with sweetness the 'Elegy' of Massenet, and her voice was beautiful in 'Signore ascolta'. Her version of this aria is somehow different from the traditional or habitual one. In her Liu, I felt more authority, a more 'hard' woman as usual, and she finished this aria with a, for me, unusual solution. In the Ravel piece, Pumeza Matshikiza was brilliant. In the duets, she was a passionate partner of Rolando.
ROLANDO
He gives me chills every time I hear his voice. No matter what he sings, it always sounds like 'Fire'.
'El Cid' is one of the greatest arias of Rolando. In Moscow, from the very first notes, 'Ah, tout est bien fini', I felt in every moment a particular passion. Each note, each word was sung with a heartrending beauty.
In the duet of 'Les Pecheurs de perles' too, his voice offered the full scale of emotions: love, hope, despair, happiness... The magic of the voice was limitless when he sang: 'Ton coeur n'a pas compris le mien, au sein de la nuit parfumée...'.
Each evening, in each performance, Rolando offers us a new and different world. But my vocabulary is not wide enough, to extensively describe all these new and fabulous experiences. It is far too limited to allow me to adequately write about his voice and to find new superlatives.
'Lamento di Federico' - each time, the greatest experience for me. Every note comes from his soul with the deepest passion.  In Moscow too, he stole the attention of the audience completely, and when he finished, the public cheered with a thunderous explosion of applause and a rain of flowers.
In 'Caro elisir', the spectators were captivated by the powerful stage presence of Rolando who felt totally comfortable and free on stage, knowing that people are loving his performance.
For 'Una furtiva lágrima', 'Ya mis horas felices' and ''No puede ser', I have always the same (and very personal) feeling: I cannot imagine these musics with another voice. For me, the voice of Rolando is the unique one to sing them.
This time too, we had 4 encores. In 'Brindisi', during the orchestral part, Rolando jumped off the stage for dancing with a lady, then he jumped back to the stage for singing the rest of this beautiful duet
With his ardent, fervent, burning passion, his enthusiasm and his commitment to each piece, Rolando ignited the audience of the Tchaikovsky hall. Standing ovations, rain of bravos and flowers,  thunderous applause.
Another glorious evening in this series of concerts!
GRACIAS, ROLANDO!

ROLANDO VILLAZÓN, PUMEZA MATSHIKIZA - OPERA GALA LONDON 14/10/14

I read a few days ago that the 2,500 seat Royal Festival Hall was set to be only half-full for this concert, if so, there must have been a late rush for tickets!!  I could not see any free seats from my position in the Hall and even heard a security guard trying to sort out a problem with two audience members who both had tickets for the same seat!  The concert attracted a nicely mixed crowd of old and young attendees and, from what I could tell, classical music aficionados, Rolando-fans and people who had come looking for something new.

Wow, they were in for a treat!  Rolando began with 'O souverain, o juge, o pere' - he strode onto the stage somberly dressed in a black suit, gripped the bar of the conductor's podium [forgive me if I've got the terminology wrong :) ] and gazed at the audience like a man about to climb a mountain or face a firing squad.  The atmosphere was instantly charged before the first note and the tension grew through the beautifully consoling music of the introduction.  And then Rolando sang.  Plaintively, powerfully, sublimely.  A hero trying to find his courage and surrender his fate to God.  Each gesture perfectly suited to telegraph hope and fear until the strong affirmative trust of that last note.  A little silence at the end and then the tension left his body as he relaxed into the audience's enthusiastic applause.  Where do those characters go when Rolando releases them?

Rolando's concert partner, Pumeza Matshikiza, also dressed elegantly in black, continued the mood and sang a piece I had not heard before, 'Elegie', by Massenet.  This aria seemed to have an unsettling, febrile melancholy which was heightened by the sense you get when listening to Pumeza's rich voice that you are listening to an old recording (in a good way!).

And then the first duet!!  'Leila! Leila! Dieu puissant ...'.  Energetic and dynamic as Leila tries to reject Nadir and then passionate and dreamy as they recall and rekindle their love.  Rolando and Pumeza's voices blended well together and they had great chemistry especially considering that this was only the second concert of their tour.

Rolando's second solo aria was 'E la solita storia del pastore'.  I have always been struck by how much sadness and longing Rolando injects into this aria in his recordings but in this performance I was awed by the amount of anguish, pain and anger he communicated. Rolando's voice rang strongly through the Hall which seemed to reverberate in a kind of shock to his last cry of 'Ahime!'  There was a sort of 'whoosh' as the audience remembered to breathe again followed by thunderous applause.  I felt in strong need of a cup of tea and a lie down after this mesmeric performance and was still recovering as Pumeza sang an enjoyable 'Signore ascolta!' from Turandot.

The last duet before the interval seemed to have arrived in no time at all.  'O soave fanciulla' was touchingly and convincingly performed.  The orchestra was a little over-powering at times but it did not ruin the performance and I loved the delighted relish Rolando managed to convey in Rodolfo's cheeky 'E al ritorno?'

After the fire and fury of the first half we enjoyed the fun and frolics of the second beginning with the overture from Don Pasquale.  The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra under Guerassim Voronkov clearly enjoyed this piece; it was full of energy and playfulness and occasionally you would see a musician smiling to themselves or catch a smile from  musician to conductor.

After the applause died down, Rolando sauntered onto the stage cradling a bottle of beer for a superbly entertaining 'Caro elisir'.  The following duet, 'Esulti pur la barbara'  staged on the theme 'Anything you can do, I can do better' reminded me of a Hollywood screwball comedy.  Pumeza made a witty and vivacious Adina and Rolando a blissfully newly-confident and swaggering Nemorino.  Rolando's shiny shoes and eyes twinkled as he danced up and down the stage to the increasing annoyance and exasperation of his Adina.

Another well-performed aria from Pumeza and then one of the jewels of Rolando's repertoire and this concert -  'Una furtiva lagrima'.   Rolando always performs this aria in a way that takes you on a journey as Nemorino works his way to the wonderful discovery that Adina really does love him.  I can only marvel at how Rolando makes it seem as if each thought has come spontaneously to Nemorino, portraying all at once delight, surprise, wonder and humility whilst at the same time singing  such a difficult aria with such breathtaking beauty.

The zarzuela arias and duets were special, particularly 'Ya mis horas felices' - sparkling and shimmering with colours like a bull-fighter's costume and brimming with pride and passion.  By this time in the concert Pumeza and Rolando were singing with a freedom and verve that was really exciting and 'Si torero quiero se' ended the official program on a wonderful high.

After sustained applause, there were encores to enjoy - the brilliant 'Pata Pata' in the Xhosa language of South Africa [Rolando explained in advance the consonant click and then duly inserted them into his verses of the song with the joy and precision of a man carefully placing a prized object on shelf of treasured possessions], 'Tonight, tonight' and then 'Brindisi', greeted with a cheer by the audience and rewarded with a standing ovation.

As the audience finally left the concert hall there was an excited hubbub and it felt like we'd all just left the best party ever.  There was no signing afterwards, perhaps due to the late finish or demanding program, but Rolando met many fans and well-wishers at the Stage Door and was extremely generous with his time.  He also mentioned that he would be back in London at some point in the future (2015/16?) for 'L'Elisir D'Amore'!!!!!  Yay!!!!!!!!
